SAAJCO Condemns $100,000 H1B Fee as Harmful and Misguided

On September 19, 2025, President Trump issued an executive order imposing a $100,000 fee on
individuals seeking entry to the United States under the H1B program. The South Asian American Justice Collaborative (SAAJCO) strongly condemns this action.

“The H1B program brings doctors who serve rural hospitals, cancer researchers working toward lifesaving treatments, and highly skilled professionals who help American businesses innovate and grow. This executive order punishes the very people whose skills strengthen our economy, improve our health, and expand opportunity across the country,” said Kalpana V. Peddibhotla, Executive Director of SAAJCO.

Beyond its economic harm, this policy cannot be separated from the racialized and xenophobic rhetoric that has surrounded H1B workers. Immigrant communities, particularly South Asians who make up the majority of H1B visa holders, are being scapegoated. Policies like this one fan prejudice rather than addressing real challenges.

The H1B program is already one of the most tightly regulated visa systems in the country. Employers must pay prevailing wages, demonstrate a need for specialized skills, and comply with labor and immigration oversight. If there are concerns about misuse, the government already has the tools to enforce the law. A $100,000 fee does nothing but drive talent away, destabilize families, and weaken U.S. competitiveness.

SAAJCO’s mission is to fight for the civil and human rights of South Asians in the United States. We will continue to support our communities and share updates as this develops. Stay connected with us at www.saajco.org.
