SAAJCO offers a free and confidential Resource Hotline to help people understand their rights and get trusted legal help. Scroll down to see what we can help with and how to get started.

What is the Resource Hotline?

The Resource Hotline is a free and confidential service run by trained SAAJCO volunteers. We offer kind, timely help and share information about local legal and community resources in areas such as:

  • Immigration
  • Domestic violence
  • Free or low-cost legal help
  • Civil rights
  • Job and workplace problems

Volunteers use a list of trusted resources in several states to help guide you to services that might be able to help. We are focused on key areas right now but welcome calls from anywhere. This helps us learn where support is most needed.

Volunteers answer the phone and review online forms. They may be law students, community workers, or legal professionals. They will ask you a few questions and help figure out what support we can provide.

The Resource Hotline is open Monday through Friday, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Pacific / 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Eastern.

If you call outside these hours, you can leave a message with your name, a safe number to call back, and a short note about your situation. We usually respond within 1 to 2 days.

Free legal consultations may be available outside of the Resource Hotline hours, including evenings and weekends. These appointments are virtual. A Resource Hotline volunteer will let you know what times are available.

Dealing with legal issues can feel scary and confusing, especially if you do not know who to ask or what to do. This Resource Hotline exists to help people who may not have other ways to get legal help. We want to make sure your rights are respected.

After you call, a volunteer will ask some questions to understand your situation. If it fits what we can help with, we will offer a free 25-minute meeting with a volunteer attorney.

At this time, SAAJCO offers a free 25 minute legal consultation with an immigration attorney.  After reviewing your intake, our hotline volunteers may refer you for a consultation if your concern fits one of the following areas:

  • Gender-based or intimate partner violence (VAWA, U visa, I-765V, I-751 waivers)
  • International student concerns (e.g., SEVIS terminations, visa issues, travel, protests)
  • Asylum (affirmative or defensive) and refugee matters
  • Removal proceedings / Notices to Appear (NTA)
  • Know Your Rights (ICE or police encounters)
  • Naturalization
  • Green card issues for aging parents
  • DACA and TPS

🚫 We do not refer consultations for:

  • Work visas or other business immigration
  • Family-based petitions (such as marriage or fiancé visas)

This service is meant for people who do not have legal representation and cannot easily access help. If you already have a lawyer or can afford one, this is not intended as a second opinion.

Hours: Monday through Friday, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Pacific / 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m Eastern.
