Director of Strategic Initiatives and Midwest Voting Rights Program at the Chicago Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights
Ami Gandhi is the Director of Strategic Initiatives and Midwest Voting Rights Program at the Chicago Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights, where she develops strategies to expand equitable civic participation across the Midwest. Her work focuses on reducing voting barriers for communities of color and low-income communities, including leading statewide voter protection efforts in 2016 and 2020, advancing voter access for people impacted by the criminal legal system, supporting Illinois redistricting advocacy, and advising election officials on the nation’s first Hindi-language ballots.
Ami has litigated cases in Illinois and Indiana and partnered with communities to draft and pass legislation. She previously served as Executive Director of the South Asian American Policy & Research Institute, Legal Director at Asian Americans Advancing Justice Chicago, and a commercial litigation attorney at Freeborn & Peters LLP.
She serves on multiple civic boards and has received honors from Indiana University, SABA North America, Chicago Fair Trade, and the NAACP.
